OMTech Laser Business Stories: Jeremy Klein
From Side Hustle to Small Business Success with OMTech
My name is Jeremy Klein, and I’m the founder of Hub City Woodworks. What started as a weekend hobby has turned into something far bigger than I ever imagined. Back in 2020, woodworking was simply my way to relax after a long workweek — a chance to unwind, get creative, and make something with my hands. I never thought it would one day become a profitable business. But with time, passion, and the right tools — especially my OMTech laser machines — I transformed a simple pastime into a successful small business.

How Did You Start the Business?
Hub City Woodworks started in early 2020. It was a time when many people were looking for new ways to spend their time and build something meaningful. I had always enjoyed woodworking, so I began making wooden flags as gifts for my friends and family. Each piece was unique. I carved every detail by hand and added personal touches to make them special.
At first, I used a CNC machine to cut and shape the wood. It worked fine for simple designs. But I soon noticed its limits. It struggled with small details and took too long to finish each project. Still, I enjoyed the process and kept creating.
Encouraged by positive feedback, I began sharing photos of my projects on Facebook and Instagram. What started as a few likes and comments soon turned into real interest and orders. Friends of friends began reaching out, asking if I could make custom flags or signs for them. That’s when I realized there might be real business potential in what I was doing.
As the orders came in, I learned a lot about running a small business — from pricing and materials to time management. However, as demand grew, so did my frustration with the CNC machine. It was slow and often struggled with small, detailed engravings. Every time I tried to make intricate logos or delicate patterns, the machine would leave rough edges or take hours to finish. I knew I needed a better solution.
How Has OMTech Impacted Your Business?
After months of research, I decided to buy my first OMTech laser engraver — a 50W model — in June 2023. I read reviews, compared brands, and watched countless videos to make sure I was investing in the right tool. The moment I started using it, the difference was clear.
The cutting speed was much faster, and the engraving precision was incredible. What used to take hours could now be done in minutes, and the results were cleaner and sharper than ever before. The OMTech laser allowed me to expand my product line beyond wooden flags. I started experimenting with acrylic signs, custom coasters, ornaments, and engraved gifts. Suddenly, my creative limits disappeared — the only limit was my imagination.
By the time Christmas came around, the machine had already paid for itself. That was a huge moment for me. Seeing the investment turn into real profit within a few months gave me the confidence to take my business more seriously.

In January 2024, I decided to take the next step and reinvest in my business. I purchased the OMTech 100W laser, a more powerful model that could handle thicker materials and much larger pieces. This new machine was a game-changer. It opened doors to new product lines — larger wall signs, layered 3D art, and high-volume production runs that would have been impossible before.
The 100W laser also made my workflow smoother. I could process multiple orders at once and keep up with the busy holiday season without long delays. I began selling at local craft fairs and farmers’ markets, where customers loved the precision and quality of my products. I also opened an online store, which allowed me to reach customers outside my area. Orders started coming in from other states, and I realized I had built something sustainable.
Today, I expect my new OMTech laser to pay for itself by Christmas again, just like the first one did. It’s not only a reliable tool but also a key part of my business growth.
Why Did You Choose OMTech?
I chose OMTech after thorough research and comparisons with other competitors on the market. The 50W model transformed my business, providing cleaner cuts and faster processing times. The success of this machine led me to purchase a more powerful model, the 100W, to meet the increasing demands of my growing business.

What Advice Would You Give Someone Hesitant to or Just About to Start Their Own Business?
If you’re thinking about starting your own business, my advice is simple but important: just start. Don’t wait until everything feels perfect — it never will. Begin small, test ideas, and learn as you go.
When it comes to laser machines, I always tell people: find the laser that has the cutting size and power you think you need, then buy the next larger size. You’ll thank yourself later. Starting small helps you build confidence, but investing wisely in the right equipment saves time and money in the long run.
Also, take advantage of the holiday season. It’s the best time to grow your sales, reach new customers, and test new products. And most of all — believe in your work. Confidence grows with every project you finish and every happy customer you serve.
Today, I earn around $12,000 a year from Hub City Woodworks, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. What began as a creative outlet has turned into a meaningful source of income and fulfilment. Each time I fire up my OMTech laser, I’m reminded of how far a little curiosity and a lot of effort can take you.
